While there have been numerous suggestions for making Face ID function with masks, none of them have proven to be effective.

At the very least, not consistently.

Using iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4, you can now unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch.

Note that iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4 are still in developer beta, but the stable version should be available by the end of the month.

To unlock your iPhone, use your Apple Watch. If you have an Apple Watch and a Mac, you’re surely aware that you can unlock your laptop with your watch. Apple’s new feature gives the iPhone a same level of convenience.

This is how you set up this functionality.

Go to Settings -> Face ID & Passcode on your iPhone and input your iPhone password.

You’ll notice a new option labeled “Unlock with Apple Watch” if you scroll down.

To unlock your iPhone, simply turn on the toggle next to the Apple Watch you want to use.

Please be patient as activation may take a few seconds. Make sure your Apple Watch is on your wrist and unlocked. Note that your Apple Watch must be password secured in order to use this feature. This prevents your iPhone from being unlocked if you don’t have your Apple Watch on.

Apple Watch may be used to lock your iPhone. You can use Face ID with a mask after you’ve set up the function. Your iPhone will be unlocked as long as you wear your Apple Watch and it is unlocked. If your iPhone has been unlocked by someone else, you can still use your Apple Watch to lock it.
